Gazooky Newsletter FOR CREATIVES NAVIGATING AI

June 2025

Every month we produce a quick round-up of significant AI developments which affect Creative Industries.

If you have any questions, or requests for research in this area, please get in touch.

For the June 25 round-up:

Design & Typography

  • AI‑powered typography evolution: Monotype’s 2025 Re:Vision report suggests font styles could soon adapt dynamically based on context. While automation in kerning is already underway, the design community remains cautious about ceding creative control techxplore.com+5futuramo.com+5virtasant.com+5theverge.com.

Film & Video Production

  • AI studio breakthrough: PJ Accetturo’s AI studio launched a viral, low-cost commercial using Google’s Veo 3, landed a major brand deal, and drew hundreds of applications. He forecasts AI reshaping crew roles and predicts AI could rival human creativity within a decade. Our view at Gazooky is that although disruption is bound to escalate, saying that AI will rival human creativity is alarmist. (See our other posts e.g. https://gazookystudios.com/news/ai-and-the-creative-industries/).

  • Darren Aronofsky enters AI filmmaking: His new NY-based studio, Primordial Soup, in partnership with Google DeepMind, is developing AI-powered short film ANCESTRA, premiering at Tribeca on June 13 en.wikipedia.org. This sort of AI creativity will augment, not diminish human creativity in our view – lots more new ways to tell stories….
  • AI enhancing heritage cinema: China’s Kung Fu Film Heritage Project is restoring over 100 classics (including Bruce Lee’s works) using AI-driven image and sound restoration, raising debates over authenticity versus preservation sfchronicle.com. Great use of AI to do something that couldn’t easily (or affordably) be done before!

Media & Advertising

  • Media execs on AI in TV: Kevin Mayer (ex-Disney) suggests AI can streamline production but isn’t a cure-all for the high cost of content businessinsider.com. Some really interesting points from Mayer, from the heart of the media sector.
  • 5 transformations via AI: Media companies like YouTube and A+E Global are using AI for personalized recommendations, AI‑A/B testing, dubbing, and budget-friendly effects, with the promise that AI makes TV “smarter, not dead” businessinsider.com.
  • Advertising agencies see opportunity: Despite Sam Altman’s warning that AI could supplant 95% of ad roles, creative directors from BBDO, BETC, and TBWA report winning lucrative campaigns powered by AI visuals and hyper‑personalized ads. Question: why is Sam Altman being so bullish about the tech he let loose on the world – we’re seeing beneath the rhetoric here, and suspecting ulterior motives? businessinsider.com+2businessinsider.com+2businessinsider.com+2.

Music & Rights

  • Deezer flags AI‑generated songs: To combat stream‑fraud, Deezer now tags AI music and withholds royalties from suspected automated uploads, ( 0.5% of total streams) but AI-generated content makes up 18% of uploads apnews.com.
  • Timbaland’s AI label sparks debate: At Cannes, Will.i.am defended Timbaland’s Stage Zero label, echoing calls for transparency in using artist submissions for AI training pagesix.com.
  • Imogen Heap’s AI advocacy: Heap is creating AI “twins” of her songs through Jen’s StyleFilter program, supporting ethical AI in music while protesting UK copyright reforms by contributing to the silent protest album Is This What We Want? en.wikipedia.org+1en.wikipedia.org+1.

Policy, Law & Industry

  • UK Data (Use & Access) Bill passes (June 19, 2025): Sparks backlash from UK artists, including Elton John, McCartney, Kate Bush, over AI training on creative works without consent stephensonharwood.com+2classicfm.com+2theguardian.com+2.
  • Regulatory pushback: Lords like Beeban Kidron are proposing amendments demanding transparency and creator opt‑out rights to safeguard cultural property ft.com+2theguardian.com+2ft.com+2.
  • UK industrial strategy includes creatives: A £150 million fund will support creative industries, alongside billions aimed at AI‑readiness and R&D in manufacturing ft.com+2reuters.com+2qmul.ac.uk+2.

 Research & Thought Leadership

  • Media & entertainment AI trends: At NAB Show, experts spotlighted agentic AI for post-production, real‑time localization, and revenue generation tvtechnology.com.
  • Ethics & labour studies: Multiple academic papers (on AI in creative workforces, screenwriting, music systems) highlight governance challenges, labour redistribution, and the need for designer‑centred development . See Gazooky’s Industry Update: https://gazookystudios.com/news/ai-and-the-creative-industries/
  • Industry survey launched: D&AD and Gazooky Studios are gathering insights from leaders, aiming to shape AI’s role in creative workflows through upcoming reports and events campaigns.dandad.org+1gazookystudios.com+1.

TAKEAWAYS

Innovation with AI tools is gathering pace: From dynamic fonts and AI-films to preservation efforts, generative AI is actively reshaping creative workflows, although thoughtful (and creative!) adoption remains important for us all.

Rights & transparency are hot topics: Legal battles and legislative changes highlight a serious reckoning over consent, compensation, and the protection of creators. Watch this space!

Economic opportunity & tension: Agencies and platforms are using AI to unlock new efficiencies and markets, but creatives warn of job displacement and loss of training pathways. See our 9 Tips for creatives: https://gazookystudios.com/news/10-tips-for-creatives-coping-with-ai-disruption/

Policy is catching up: Governments, regulators, and industry associations are ramping up support and safeguards, but momentum and compromise are needed to ensure a balanced creative future.
